Comparative review of dictionaries for English learners

August 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

Small collage of dictionary screenshotsIt took me ages to write it, but here it is. Probably the only (and certainly the best) comparative review of dictionaries for English learners on the Web. I’ve tested the following dictionaries:

  • Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
  • Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary (5th edition)
  • Collins COBUILD Advanced Dictionary (6th edition)
  • Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (5th edition, 2009)
  • Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary

Which dictionaries are best for serious English learners? Read the review to find out.

Sep 3: Updated review and scores based on the patch that Longman has published for the LDOCE.

    Greetings!

I saw your comparative review the other day. It’s all heavenly except for one thing: the absence of OALD 8, at least for now.

I personally and strongly suggest that you give it a try if you haven’t yet. I don’t know whether they had ever seen your review heve since all those defects in the previous edition were neatly dealt with. It has a completely different GUI now and is really kick-ass!

So that’s it. Wish you a good day!
