Thoughts for serious language learners

Totally like whatever, you know?

In case you hadn’t noticed,
it has somehow become uncool
to sound like you know what you’re talking about?
Or believe strongly in what you’re saying?
Invisible question marks and parenthetical (you know?)’s
have been attaching themselves to the ends of our sentences?
Even when those sentences aren’t, like, questions? You know?

I thought you might enjoy this typographically animated version of “Totally like whatever, you know?”, a poem by Taylor Mali (text version here). The poem satirizes the use of like, you know, and the rising, “questiony” intonation at the ends of a sentences, which are found in the speech of many young people in the United States.

great song (and the other songs on his site)
has anybody else found out he has a lot in common with the poet?

Isn’t that a good thing that people talk like they don’t know what they’re saying? Because, you know, like, most of the time they really are full of shit? Isn’t it good that people don’t believe strongly in what they’re saying? After all, we’re more often, basically, wrong than right.

    Is antimoon closing down?

The narrator’s voice sounds just like Samuel L. Jackson.

Whenever I read some articles on Antimoon, I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that Tom was some kind of “genius AI”. I’ve only seen Tom’s old photo. What does he really look like?

I’d really appreciate it if somebody could post a couple of pics of him or a link, if there’s nothing wrong with it, of course.

dimon17: Why you are so interested in how does he look like? Go on facebook , add him as a friend and you can see bunch of pictures there. Why bother. In fact there is not real real antimoon anylonger.

I just saw his real photos on facebook. What a pleasant surprize. He looks really handsome in real life. I always thought that he was some sort of muscular guy because that’s how he was looked like in his old pictue which was posted in his intro at the Antimoon.
