By 2004, the EU will have a population of half a billion.

I see that there people who are very optimistic with the EU. However, we are still depending on our "dad", the United States, in order to defend from terrorism. Each EU country acts according to theirs respective local interests and we cannot be agreement with almost anything.

EU will collapse in five years. Then they will beg USA to help them out again.
Ed Normon   Wednesday, December 11, 2002, 14:33 GMT
SS, I can garantee you that the EU will not collapse in five years.

Europeans like the Idea that the US has military bases in Europe. This is an excellent situation for Europeans, because it is the American tax payers that are paying for them to "defend" this continent.

Last century was Americas, this century it is Europe's. But don't get upset about it.....At the end of the day, its YOU that counts, you can be a poor bastard and live in a rich country.
Union Jack   Wednesday, December 11, 2002, 17:29 GMT
Ed,

That's not exactly true. The money comes from NATO member countries and the country the base is located at. For instance, Germany and Japan pay one hell of a lot of money to the US forces.

Europe has no dynamism and is too small and poor. London is the only international city that educated workers can find well paid jobs.
Karl   Wednesday, December 11, 2002, 18:06 GMT
Europe is certainly interesting and culturally diverse. In 5 years, big cities like Berlin and Paris will be more developed. Many people will be able to find more interesting jobs in various European cities not only London and EU will provide more economic and political freedom to Europeans.

I am not against the EU but believe it hasn't done a whole lot of good. I believe that the death penalty should be reinstated in Britain for murderers. The EU disagrees. The EU wanted to release child killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady early. Why it is beyond me!! They want to lower prison sentences. They want to take control of completely different economies and shuffle them together in the hope that they will prosper. The result is a failure. All Euro countries have benefited little from the Euro and all former superpowers of Europe including France, Germany and this week Portuagal are seemingly begging Britain to join. I'll never allow it and I doubt other people in Britain will judging from recent polls. The united countries of Europe would not work particularly well because of teh variety of wealth of langauges of the area. The union though is an ok idea as I believe america should be competed against.

Marushka
I totally agree with you and I really hope there are lots more out there
it scares me at times the way the Eu has too much say.
J   Tuesday, December 17, 2002, 03:48 GMT
I agree, and I know several more who do.
Simon   Tuesday, December 17, 2002, 07:54 GMT
The EU had nothing to do with Hindley and Brady. You're confusing it with the European Court of er... something or other which is either in Strasbourg or Geneva.
mike   Tuesday, December 17, 2002, 08:46 GMT
No Union Jack....
not all Americans think they're the biggest and baddest at everything....that's just your pig-headed prejudice once again (typical of a European leftist-type). While I'm proud to be an American, I will definitely admit that the country is far from perfect and has made its fair share of mistakes. However for the sake of conversation, the US is often criticized for shady dealings of selling missiles etc to the Middle East. However, France and Germany (powerful EU nations who claim to represent European pacifism) have had their own fair share of shady dealings with the Middle East as well.
Oh well, perhaps someday the EU will be the world superpower and we can all sit back, laugh at you and criticize all of you for your hypocrisy. Whoever wields the most power Jack will always bear the brunt of insults and criticism.

P.S. Don't you ever get tired of the same old song and dance you write about each time you post a message.

"Right now, there is actually a building of an Empire, its called the European Union and by 2010. It is expected to have A very bigger population A bigger economy A bigger military A bigger influence Than the USA."

maybe D...and more power to you....then we Americans can sit back and watch the masses turn against all of you "Enlightened" Europeans. You know the powerful nations will get greedy...c'mon it's only a matter of time. C'mon now...Germany, France, England....you don't think they'll want a bigger more forceful piece of the pie if the EU becomes the new hegemon. And when they do D, we'll be laughing and making fun of all of you (the citizens of the new superpower) with the rest of the world....much like what you guys do now.
M   Tuesday, December 17, 2002, 16:33 GMT
People, people! We all know that without English there would be no American!
All American is is a mutated form of the English language!
Marushka   Tuesday, December 17, 2002, 20:18 GMT
The European court of human rights is still connected to the EU. The EU does however have a plus point. You can travel between countries without a passport, unless travelling to and from the UK where there are border controls. If a union or superpower was created what language would it use? Every country would want their own language to be incorporated. Translators are extremely costly and going to cost more when more countries join. When and if the countries are united they will want to be independant again like with other empires and the situation will end up where it started in 1965 ish. Keep the pound and get rid of the Euro. For some reason all of Europe wants Britain to join teh Euro, as if it the whole union and currency will flop without us. They have lost their freedom and are jealous we still have ours.
