What is your favourite English name, as in a person's first name?
Easterner   Monday, April 18, 2005, 17:24 GMT
Male name: Geoffrey
Female name: Gwendolyn

I understand the latter is not an English name in the strictest sense (must be Welsh, as I suppose), but it sounds very delicate and rare.

Adam has to be the best, even though I'm not sure if it's English.

I think it means both "First Man" and "Red Earth."

Favourite English, i.e. truly Anglo-Saxon names:
Edmund and Emma
Damian   Monday, April 18, 2005, 19:04 GMT
FREDRIK:

Edmund is really an old historical Anglo Saxon name.......knowing what I already know about you, my erudite friend, you no doubt know that. The English had two kings by the name of Edmund back in the 10th century, while East Anglia alone had a King by the same name.

As for Emma.....it's going strong today and still a popular name for girls, more so in England I think.

Anglo-Saxon names all sound old-fashioned, and are the sort of names that elderly Englishmen would have.

Before England was united and was separate Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the kingdoms had kings with names such as Edgar and Edwin (Eadwine).

And there's Alfred - the greatest Anglo-Saxon king of all - the guy who inited the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms under one flag, England.

James -- Bond, James.

Jessica

(I didn't think much about these, so I don't know whether they're really my favorites. But I have good associations with the Jameses I've known, and I wanted to change my name to Jessica when I was a teenager.)

Doesn't Emma mean "grandmother" in German
