The French and Germans and other people always complain about the Brits not learning other languages, but according to those lists the same percantage of Brits understand German as the French, and a higher percentage of Brits understand French than both the Germans and Italians.
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 10:57 GMT
Understanding is very different from speaking...
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 11:00 GMT
And eh , hehehehe...it seems The Netherlands are always in the top 5 ...

Because...

Es stimmt das wir gut in Sprachen sind.
C'est vrai nous sommes bien de langue etranger.
It's true we are good at languages.
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 11:06 GMT
nico,

As seen in your data,German is a 100 % in Germany, and English is 100% in the UK,but why does France have 97%?

=>Allemagne 100

Royaume-Uni 100

France 97 <=
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 11:07 GMT
but why does France have 97% for French?
Damian   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 11:38 GMT
SANDER: The reasons the Dutch people are good at speaking foreign Languages are:

1 Their country is physically small
2 They are close to countries with widely spoken Languages
3 The Dutch Language is of no practical use outside
the Netherlands where nobody understands or speaks it.

You can't argue against those facts. With respect.
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 12:05 GMT
Sure I can!

=>The Dutch Language is of no practical use outside
the Netherlands where nobody understands or speaks it.<=

This sentance tells me that Dutch is spoken outside the Netherlands but in the Netherlands nobody understands or speak it? ;)

Sander "c'est vrai nous sommes bien de langue etranger" You should have written "c'est vrai nous sommes bien EN langueS etrangerES"
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 12:08 GMT
But you knew what I was trying to say, right Jerome?
Aurélie   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 12:38 GMT
or you could say : "c'est vrai, nous sommes BON en langues étrangères."
me I knew what your were trying to say Sander !!

I don't know why 97% of french people can speak french...maybe the others 3% are from the "dom-tom" ( french islands...)

sorry if I made mistakes. :)
Damian   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 12:47 GMT
Alright...a slight rewording so that Mr SANDER gets the true meaning of what I said (but he knew what I meant anyway).

Outside the Netherlands practically nobody speaks or understands Dutch! Maybe in some of the former Dutch colonies, yes...but elsewhere....nope!

I admit my sentence was badly set out.
Sander   Saturday, June 04, 2005, 12:51 GMT
Well DAMIAN its good that you admitted your own fault, and you know that if you ever have any questions about the English language you can always ask me.I don't care how many times I have to explain it to you,Im here to help you.

"C'est vrai nous sommes bien de langue etranger. "
"This sentance tells me..."

...that Sander is not good "de langue etranger."
