Cool! Google in West Flemish!
Okay for now I'll forfeit, but only out of 'onkunde'. I'll look into the subject
a bit more before debating it further
Andre your back! Yippee, thought I was going to have to debate with him all on my
own
Well to give Sander credit, according to this website West Flemish is a dialect :)
But still, it looks like a language to me

Yeh I guess we have to believe that. But it looks like a language to me as well.
A language that I don't know anything about, but a language none the less
When I look as West Flemish, it seems to me to be further away from Dutch than Afrikaans
was when it officially became a language
That's my view as well. I think the major problem is that the people who speak WF
is so integrated with those who speak Dutch that it's easiest to call it a dialect,
while we Afrikaans speaking people are at the other side of the 'aardbol'. Much
easier to call it a language then.
BTW even after Afrikaans was officially recognized as a language in 1875, Dutch was
still widely used by Afrikaans speakers. For example, newspapers were still published
in Dutch, and when the first ones started to use the occasional Afrikaans article,
they risked using readers. It was only in well into the 20th century when newspapers
first became fully Afrikaans. Only when Afrikaans became an official language according
to the constitution, did it really start to replace Dutch. Or in reality, when it
had the support of the vast majority of Afrikaans speakers. I think the question
of West Flemish being a dialect or language is more complex than just whether in
is a language linguistically, the issue is broader than that.
>they risked using readers<
They risked LOSING readers, not using them... :)
Like Ive said before...its a dialect. But why is that SO bad ?
I believe that if West Flemish start to be used by more people in those districts
like Belgium etc it could very well be declared as a language at a later stage.
Like you said, it took quite a lot of time for Afrikaans to become a language in
its own right.
But hey they already have Google in WF like Sander so nicely pointed out to us, so
I guess there are a lot of people on the Internet that is WF. Just wish that they'd
come on to this site to help with this discussion.
The thing is Afrikaans differs in syntax and grammer from dutch,WF doesn't.
Okay, I guess it isn't that bad to call it a Dialect. I don't think that the people
who speak the Dialect mind that much. Maybe it's just us weird people here. Btw
Sander where did you learn so much about Afrikaans, I'm very impressed
Andre is a great teacher.
Good job Andre! And from what I've heard you had also converted Sander from an Afrikaans
and Afrikaner hater, into someone who is tollerant with us. That's an improvement
at least.
