|
Adobe, Google, Penis, Vantage point, Laboratory and Multimedia.
Pls use antimoon's transcription. thank you. |

Is Antimoon's transcription written down somewhere? I'll use my own system which
makes sense to me.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't get your suggested pronunciations of above mentioned
words. I can understand only ASCII.
Here is the link: http://www.antimoon.com/how/pronunc-ascii.htm |

| Thanks mxm. I'll check that link out. |

If you don't have a font installed that supports IPA, see
http://www.mxsmanic.com/words.pdf (Acrobat format, with the IPA) |

I would recommend you get familiar with XSAMPA as compared to antimoon's system,
as XSAMPA is most widely used on this forum, and is very widespread in other places.
XSAMPA is basically IPA but written with normal keyboard characters so everyone can
read and write them. Here's a link to understand it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XSAMPA If you're not familiar with IPA there's also a link in that article to plenty of information explaining IPA on the wikipedia site. My XSAMPA pronunciations of those words (the phonemic transcriptions on the left will be easier to understand at first, but the ones on the right are the more specific transcriptions): Adobe /@dobi/ ---> [@"do:bi] Google /gMg@l/ --> ["gM:g5=] Penis /pinIs/ --> ["p_hi:nIs] Vantage point /væntIdZ pOInt/ --> ["væ:nIdZ p_hOI~?] Laboratory /læbr@tOri/ --> ["læ:br\@t_hOri] Multimedia. /mVltaImidi@/ --> [mo5t_haI"mi4i@] Sometimes I also use [mo5t_hi] in "multimedia" instead of [mo5t_haI]. |
|
|
|
I pronounce those as:
"Adobe" : /@"dobi/ --> [@"do.bi] "Google" : /"gugl=/ --> ["gu.gl=] "penis" : /"pinIs/ --> ["p_hi~.nIs] "vantage point" : /"v{ntIdZ poInt/ --> ["v{~.4~IdZ p_hoI~?] "laboratory" : /"l{br@%tori/ --> ["5{.br@.%t_ho.r\i] "multimedia" : /%mOltaI"midi@/ --> [%mO5.taI~."mi.4i@] It's not that often when I have to figure out what not only the primary stress but also what the secondary stress is in a word. |
|
|
| Little correction: that should be have [%mO5.t_haI~."mi.4i@]; I'm not used to thinking of aspiration *inside* of words, so hence I neglected that case, but I saw Kirk's example above, checked carefully, and yes, I aspirate that /t/ as well. |

| Ack, sorry for the double post. |
