Let's say I want to list the places I worked at, but mention only the major ones. If space is limited, should I just say "and other places" at the end? I heard that ending the sentence with "etc" when listing examples is not permitted. :(

If you say "such as" or "e.g." at the beginning or whatever, you don't have to add any of those phrases. Just list the examples and be done with them; by the phrases that you begin with, they'll know that it is not an all-inclusive list.
