Lanuage stereotypes
Just because it is the greatest piece of literature ever doesn't mean a lot of people have read it. 40% of the population has probably never read ANY literature at all, and 70% have probably not read any since school. And clearly, Don Quixote is much too difficult and long for school children.
After school most people are too busy for literature, so that leaves just people who like great art and students of literature etc... So it's not surprising not many people have read it. Think about it, if Shakespeare had written a 1000 page long book rather than short plays, I doubt any one would read him at all these days. They definitely wouldn't teach it in schools.

I imagine lots of people have never read the whole thing, which is something like 1200 pages long (two volumes?). I've only read excerpts.
