Linguistics survey

Door   Sun Jul 10, 2005 12:48 am GMT
I'm restarting a dialect survey to find out what differences there are in people's pronunciation and grammar and word usage. Most of these questions just answer with 'yes' or 'no', although you can elaborate on your answers if you wish. Thanks to those who fill this out.

Age (or age group if you don't want to put your real age):
Location where you grew up, or location where you learned English:

1. Do you distinguish pronunciation between:
caught and cot
Mary, marry, merry
draw and drawl
card and cord
pour and poor
the vowels in ''father'' and ''bother''
pull and pool
wine and whine
toon and tune
fill and feel
fell and fail
horse and hoarse
hull and hole
new and nu (greek letter)
flour and flower
hire and higher
loot and lute
rood and rude
the first vowel in ''furry'' and ''hurry''
the first vowel in ''mirror'' and ''nearer''
the vowels in ''bad'' and ''lad''
the vowels in ''bit'' and ''kit''
''bred'' and ''bread''
''pause'' and ''paws''
''board'' and ''bored''
''pane'' and ''pain''
''toe'' and ''tow''
''sole'' and ''soul''
''meat'' and ''meet''

The vowels in ''brute'' and ''fruit''
''not'' and ''knot''
''mews'' and ''muse''
''nome'' and ''gnome''
''roil'' and ''royal''
''taut'' and ''taught''

2. Do the following sentences sound okay to you? (Don't worry about "technically" correct grammar, just tell me if these sound allright in your opinion, or if you use them.)
I might could do it tonight.
Do you want to come with?
We stood on line for two hours.
She is in hospital.
We seen the movie yesterday.
The car needs cleaned.
We are in five.

3. Write the word that you use to refer to these:
source of water over the sink or tub
a carbonated drink
the thing that you drink out of at the park
center of a peach
Two or more people
tiny candies put on top of an ice cream cone or cupcake

Yeah, I think I distinctly remember this specific survey being done in the past here.

And anyways, nice to see you again, american nic; I was myself sort of wondering where you'd gone off to after a while there.

Yes it has. As I said, I'm restarting it. And it's a little bit different from the last survey.

Yeah, I'm back. The site was down for a few weeks (or maybe it was just me and my computer, and then I was in San Francisco for the last week. I'm home just today, then I'm gone again for the next three weeks. Fun, eh?

Now to add the other three.

A drink made with milk and ice cream? MILKSHAKE
A peace of furniture that you can sit or lay on in your living room? COUCH or SOFA (I use them pretty much interchangably)
The level of a building that is partly or entirely underground? BASEMENT

Yes. That's because troll Don (who has multiple personas..this time it's "Door") keeps on bringing it back.

Hi, american nic! Antimoon's forum was down for a couple of weeks, and actually in that time arose the "temporary" forum which we've now decided to keep in its own right--come check it out, sign up, and post over there, we'd love to see you over there. :)

<<Yes. That's because troll Don (who has multiple personas..this time it's "Door") keeps on bringing it back.>>

I am not a troll at all. My name is not Don. My code name for this forum is ''Door'' but that is of course not my real name. Also this topic has only been on this forum one other time. So I don't know what you mean by ''keeps on bringing it back.''. People are stupid to say that someone has to be labelled a troll if they bring back an archived thread as if there were something wrong with bringing back a thread from the archives. How stupid can those people be?
Door   Sun Jul 10, 2005 6:31 am GMT
Why in the world can't someone bring back something from the archives without being a troll? That just doesn't make sense.

Don't mind Kirk, Door. I've noticed he tends to write with a sense of authority, yet he often doesn't have a firm grasp on the subject being discussed.
