What I want to know is why do the CNN world presenters almost all speak with British accents? Trying to be more like BBC to raise their prestige?

Its all about the time of day. If you are tuning into CNN at a time when its midnight in America, they show live news from their London studio, where its all British accents (I am not sure about this though).

I hear mainly American accents on CNN, with the occasional British correspondent reporting on certain topics.

<Nevertheless, don't most commonwealth nations have their own BBC? >

Well during the early days of television - there were programmes straight from the UK to the television of the commonwealth population.

They later moved onto specialising viewing material for a particular country but the main operations remained in London.

Soon commonwealth governments estiblished their own version of the BBC - eg. ABC (Australia), CBC (Canada), SABC (South Africa), NZBC (New Zealand). Due to them being estiblished - the BBC phased out commonwealth boardcasting.

Now BBC is once again moving into the international market - not only in it's former markets but also into other regions in their own language.

mmm I think I typed alot of crap...
