I opened this thread hoping to see Romance. Oh well, it is still good to know that some English speakers know that there are more than 5 or 6 Romance languages. Certainly Galego is not a dialect of Castellano, nor is Català a dialect of Castellano nor academic French. The Spanish Constitution of 1978 recognizes Galego and Català; the Swiss Constitution recognizes Romansch. I have a friend who grew up speaking Leccese (Lecce, Apulia, Italy) in the home and Bärndütschi (Bern, Switzerland) with her friends. She makes no claims that they are dialects of standard academic Italian or Hochdeutsch. She switches to Italian or Hochdeutsch when those are required. When I speak to her Leccese only speaking father I use Portuguese. As long as we speak slowly, we get along fairly well. Since all of these “non-official” languages are older than the official, it would be hard to maintain a claim that they are dialects of the “new-comer official” languages.
