These last two are ENGLISH sites, so the francophiles can't say they are written by "lying hispanics." And the third one is about Chinese coming up in the US and it barely mentions French at all.

French is important, but it looks like Spanish and Chinese will eventually surpass it in popularity and usefullness. Time to face reality francophiles.

NICE!

Spanish is more popular in Britain because the Brits live on a rainy dingy island and have a passion for getting piss-faced on the beach in Spain. And when they're old they move there and adapt parasitic tendencies. Why would they want to learn German? For the snow? Certainly not for the culture! Brits care about culture as much as they care about brushing their teeth!

Yes, it is nconfirmed! It is true that French is the second most studied foreign langauge in India after English not Spanish.

Obviously, the supporting link that you posted is made by a hispanic therefore its inclined to Spanish. "elcastellano" is in its address.

French in India : A privileged status

The French language owes its presence in India to both a network of Alliances françaises (15 offices) and a solid basis for the language itself in secondary schools, where French is the first foreign language to be studied by pupils. The total number of individuals learning French is around 300,000 for 3,000 teachers. At higher education level, French is compulsory in vocational schools dedicated to tourism and to hotel catering. It is also taught at 40 universities, of which 12 have a department for French studies. These departments are often very dynamic as demonstrated by the decision of the University of Pondicherry to organize a major international colloquium in December, 1998 on the French-language literatures of Africa. The reason why French enjoys a privileged status in India is probably due to the successful decolonization, in the fifties, of the five trading counters which France had owned in India since the 17th century. The best known of these counters is Pondicherry, which Nehru wanted to turn into « an open window on French culture ».

Yes Chinese, Hindi, and Spanish are growing at an astonishing rate but just in native speakers while secondary and non-native of English, French, Russian, and Arabic are growing at astonishing rate unlike Spanish which remains submerged and sinking further.

<< According to the English version of Wikipedia, Spanish is spoken by 400-500 million (so the average is 450) and French, (according to the same source) is spoken by only 175 million.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language >>

According to George Weber's report in 1997 French had 190 million secondary speakers while Spanish had just 20 million. Native speakers of Spanish doesn't guarantee its importance because just the hispanic speak and understand Spanish while French is understood by more than 150 million non-native francophone compared to Spanish by just around 5 million far fewer than German or even Italian.

But, you know that the tendencies are very important. The FUTURE of English and French languages are guaranteed:

French as a foreign language is the second most frequently taught language in the world after English. The International Organization of Francophonie has 51 member states and governments. Of these, 28 countries have French as an official language. French is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. French and English are the only two global languages.

One example of the importance of French can be seen in a recent listing of international jobs (8/25/08) distributed by the US State Department: 78 required or preferred French while just 17 for Spanish.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language 2008 Survey indicates that more students are interested in studying French than any other foreign language in the United States(SOON SPANISH WILL BE OVERTAKEN BY FRENCH AND EVEN BY ITALIAN AND CHINESE BECAUSE AMERICANS ARE BEGINING TO REALIZE THAT IRRELEVANCE OF SPANISH AND THERE'S NO POINT OF STUDYING IT SINCE IT DOESN'T TRANSMIT KNOWLEDGE).

The most recent survey by the Modern Languages Association (2006) shows that French enrollments in the United States are on the rise.

Of the various types of professional positions for which international organizations recruit, five required French and two for Spanish, according to the fact sheet released by the UN Employment Information and Assistance Unit Bureau of International Organization Affairs U.S. Department of State, December 1, 2000.

Historically France and the French language have had an enormous influence over American society. France was the United States' first ally. French thought played a dominant role among the founders of the United States in the 18th century, and it continues to shape America today through the influence of such intellectual currents as post-structuralism and post-modernism. In the humanities and the social sciences, many of the most important writings have come from France. Students and researchers who know French have access to these works for several years before they are translated into English. Many significant works are never translated and remain accessible only to those who know the language. In addition, most graduate schools require knowledge of at least one foreign language, and French remains the most commonly used language after English.

Non-member of Francophonie with Francophone Communities

United States
The United States has no official language constitutionally defined at the federal level, although English is predominant and required in many acts of civil life, with the exception of some states or counties where francophone communities are more present. Language teaching is not binding for residents while learning English is a necessary condition for obtaining U.S. citizenship (such rules depend on the state of residence, where other languages are also used locally such as Spanish or German, and are officially unilingual or bilingual). The Francophone community is also important in California and New York. The question of membership in La Francophonie of the States of Louisiana, and Maine and Vermont (where francophones are many) is discussed, but is problematic because many other linguistic communities exist in all states, and charter La Francophonie poses problems related to conflict of interest with the federal policy that affect all States.

In fact, only Puerto Rico has a constitutionally approved status for a language other than English, because it has a broader autonomy. Algeria
Algeria is the second French-speaking country in the world after France. There are also a problem relating to its independence conflict with France. For Algeria, the French language is a rich cultural legacy of colonialism and therefore does not accept French protectorate on this legacy or the use of the language for purposes protectorales, although the OIF is completely independent of French Government, whose weight in decisions is weak against other francophone African countries all in the organization. However, Algeria has participated in the Francophonie summit in Quebec in 2008, as a guest of honor.

Israel
Nearly twenty percent of the Israeli population could speak French, according to some statistical. Nearly twenty percent of the Israeli population could speak French, according to some statistical. Many Israelis are of French or French-Maghrebi. Many Israelis are of French or French-Maghrebi. Several Israeli personalities have expressed their desire to improve relations with la Francophonie.

However, this is a Francophonie which does not recur, the vast majority of descendants of these immigrants n'apprenant not French at school. In 2002, only 55 miles students learned French, less than 10% of the total students, against for example, nearly 80% in Lebanon (most often as the first foreign language) and 100% in Syria, where French became mandatory in 2003.

However, one of the major difficulties for accession would be the traditional hostility of Arab countries members of the organization, particularly because of Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 2006, Canada is one of the only countries that supported the Israeli claims within the OIF.

In 2007, the CRIF has taken the initiative to ask the politicians to support the entry of Israel in the Francophonie. It's funny that the francofanatics try to claim that the US has an having a francophone community worth noting. You never hear French in the US unless you go to the upstate border with Quebec or in southern Louisiana where some people (under 500,000) speak a creole. In total, less than 1% of people speak French.

It also funny when Frenchies claim "5 continents" for French. This has turned into a slogan for francofanatics that is BS that stretches the truth. French is not an offical language of any Asian country. The French territory in South America is technically part of France and has a very small population, so it doesn't count and is very insignificant. IN REALITY French is only official on 3 continents. I could claim that ANY language is "spoken" on 5 continents. Should I count Chinatowns and say 5 continents for Chinese?

It's the English speaking people who declared French that it's spoken in 5 continents along with English.

If there's a false claim made here then it's the 400 million native Spanish speakers made by you when it's actualy 330 million.
