Why German is not popular here?

Because german people speak english. So don't need to learn german.

German is like Occitan, a beautiful language with a lot of history but it's declining.

<<How hard can this language be?>>

A whole heck of a lot tougher than English -- just ask Mark Twain.

Printed German does look great on paper, though. (All those umlauts, and none of those asymmetrical acute and grave accents that you so often find in the Romance Languages.)

For those of you who are interested
in German,
I could recommend this german website of Werner aus Stade

http://sprachen-infos.info/

it contains at least ten DICTIONARIES and WORDLISTS of German
(you will even find Lowgerman/Plattdeutsch and Klingon/tlhIngan)
with easy search functions as well as various links on languages
and many other interesting subjects.
