Plot summary for

From a true story. In Atlanta in 1913, a 13-year-old girl is murdered in the factory where she works. The factory manager, a Jew named Leo Frank, is convicted and sentenced to hang. Georgia Governor John Slaton suspects that Frank may have been railroaded by public desire for revenge and hatred of Frank's religion and northern (US) ties. But as a rising politician, Slaton also knows that to violate such strong public opinion by questioning the judgment would be political suicide. Will his conscience overcome his ambition?

The story reminds me of 'To kill a Mocking Bird' by Harper Lee published in 1960. Which is a recommended novel in Scottish schools.

The picture that emerges from this civil trial over an unpaid bill is of a conspiracy between the prosecutor Hugh Dorsey and Harry Scott of Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency to find Leo Frank guilty of murder. Although we will almost certainly never know just what was said between Dorsey and Scott, their collaboration seems to have assured that Leo Frank would not receive a fair trial for a crime he almost certainly did not commit.

Can't say that I've ever heard of Mary Phagan, and I only know of Amanda Knox through British media (not sure that's a big story in the US). I've noticed that what is front page news in one country often isn't in another; news is tailored to what the outlet supposes is interesting to their particular audience.
