Chiding but serious

"I think now is good." She was chiding but serious too.

Why the 'but'? Aren't you normally serious when chiding?

Oh gosh, this is so hard to explain. But it makes perfect sense. By serious, they mean actually upset. Chide in this instance means simply nag or scold. In a half-hearted manner. The definition was changed because of the word serious.
