Haha, mine too! And people here really are patriotic...nothing more odd than seeing the US flag and the Confederate flag together, but it's not uncommon in my town.

There are American flags around here too. No Confederate flags of course. There are also several Canadian and British Columbian flags too. Also many people fly Scandinavian flags, especially Norwegian flag, often unaccompanied by an American flag. The Norwegian flag's my favorite.

Reading all these posts really makes me feel that I'd like to face the sheer challenge of learning Chinese - Mandarin I suppose.
After all, it's no way like tackling one of the European Continental Languages is it?
Even the sound of people speaking Chinese reinforces the enormity of the task involved in learning the Language - it just doesn't sound like any western Language in the way it's voiced - words seemed to be swallowed half way through somehow.
I reckon Japanese learning would be just as much of a challenge to a westerner, especially of the British variety, who are not at all regarded as being good linguists, by and large.

France closes down completely for August! They do indeed all go "en vacances" and head south! Good for them - no wonder so many Brits go over there to retire or to set up their own business in the Provencal sun or even become Monsieur le Maire of a local village - it does happen, and if that isn't a good incentive to become fluent in French then nothing is! French rural ife is really lived at a gentle pace - the further south you go in Europa the more a kind of "manana" mindset takes over.....
