Old (mostly uneducated) people rarely articulate when speaking dialect/regional tongue, sadly.
Until the XVth century they didn't make a difference between Dutch and (Low) German, by the way and in a way we pretty much could have ended speaking High German.

German isn't that much disliked as far as I noticed, understudied and in decline, yes, but disliked?

I've just heard an Italian song,in my opinion Italian is the nicest language ever...
