second vowel in against

i recently heard the second vowel in against as /eɪ/ by a west englishman, which differs from the /ɛ/ I am used to hearing by americans

is that pronunciation specific to any accents?
or is it the only word affected?
are there any other words where the same vowel can be heard with /eɪ/ instead of /ɛ/?
thank you

Yes, "again" as well. I heard several people in Vancouver say /@'gen/ and /@'genst/ rather than /@'gIn/ and /@'gInst/.

so its not really to any particular accents then, just another variant of pronouncing the words? that's interesting
