French resembles German sometimes.

So let's summarize:

Spanish, Italian and Romanian sound Latin

Portuguese and Moldovan Romanian sound Slavic

French sounds Germanic

French sounds more Celtic than Germanic. It sounds a lot like Breton.

I would say it's Breton that sounds like French and not vice-versa. I wonder if Basque spoken by French Basques sounds like French too. In Spain it happens the same: all the other languages sound like Spanish . There is a name for this phenomenon but I can't remember.

It's because they're in the same Sprachbund.

But French sounds a lot like Gaulish to me--more so than it sounds Germanic.

There is not one romance language that sounds germanic. French sounds pretty romance to me.

The Germanic languages like to keep it that way.

I would definitely say that Dutch is THE language that sounds more German.
wolf727   Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:49 pm GMT
Oh dear, sorry. Just noticed the question was pertaining to the Romance languages!
So Dutch is out then.

I guess it would be Swiss Romansch then Belgian Wallon that would be the most Gemanic sounding Romance languages. But no Romance language sounds has similar to a Germanic language like Portuguese dose to Slavic languages. A sound comparison exists between Romance and Slavic languages but not between the sound of Romance and Germanic languages.
MacKerrieghtreigh   Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:07 pm GMT
Actually, maybe Italian is the most Germanic sounding Romance language. Both Swedish and Italian have the same sing-songiness going on about them. So Italian then Romansh then Walloon, but still nothing compared to like what Portuguese is to Slavic languages.

"Actually, maybe Italian is the most Germanic sounding Romance language."

Are u crazy?
Italian is the less germanic sounding romance language.
Italian is the most romantic of all romantic languages.
More so than the Spanish.
