New Official Language

New Zealand ministers take into consideration of declaring 'Haastsch' (Dutch) a national language. Such cities such as Haast, Gisboorn (Gisborne) and other Western Cities have been historical Dutch settlements in New Zealand support this move while English speaking cities in the North and East oppose this idea.

This would be their third official language with English and Maori (Native Language).

Afrikaans is also another language has exceeded growth of other languages spoken in New Zealand due to high number of Afrikaaners settling in New Zealand. Such areas are North Shore city, Howick and others are forming Afrikaaner speaking areas.

GLAD WE DON'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM IN FRANCE. A LANGUAGE LIKE THIS WOULD SCARE OTHERS AWAY.

Official status

Dutch is an official language of the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, Aruba, and the Netherlands Antilles. The Dutch, Flemish and Surinamese governments coordinate their language activities in the Nederlandse Taalunie ('Dutch Language Union'). Afrikaans is an official language in South Africa. Of the inhabitants of New Zealand, 19% say their home language is Dutch (see article on New Zealand).

The number of people coming from the Netherlands though is considerably higher but from the second generation on most people changed their language in favour of English.

"19% say their home language is Dutch"

Strange it over took the Native language of New Zealand it currently is around 12%. And in most cases most of the Maori speakers are White. Most of the Native speakers are only fluent in English.

I never heard of such a thing until I came across New Zealand.

By the way, most of the Maori speakers ARE NOT WHITE. They are Maori. And very few actually speak it fluently. They just learn frases which they pump out at times to impress their friends.

Those towns were founded about 100 years ago. The Dutch speakers are gone with the wind.

New Zealand? That small state of Australia?

Franco,

If you were a true New Zealander you would know you're talking like a drunk monkey right now.

=>Those towns were founded about 100 years ago. The Dutch speakers are gone with the wind. <=

As a New Zealander you should know that the Dutch discovered New Zealand, 'Nieuw Zeeland'. And that 0.7% of the total population speaks Dutch.Which isn't m uch, but still more than Korean: 0.4%.It is mnot gone with the wind.

If you want to be a racist (reference to the Korean remark) join the National Socialist Party of New Zealand.

I did not start this topic, why should I? I'm one of the few people that aren't here to make propaganda for his or her language.

More people in New Zealand speak Afrikaans than Dutch.
Sander   Wed Feb 01, 2006 3:37 pm GMT
Really? Afrikaans isn't directly mentioned on wikipedia:
