"Snapper (a dog) heard his name and barked acknowledgment. A short back-and-forth ensued between him and my mother until he finally sat on his haunches and quieted."

What does "back-and-forth" mean in this context?

back-and-forth - exchange, conversation, mutual acknowledgment, or some form of communication

In fact Snapper was to-ing and fro-ing between him and your mother, till it stopped moving and came to a standstill close to your mother.

Cheers. Claude.
