Or, I finally managed to get up enough in nerve to ask her to dance Which one do you think sounds better? Perhaps both need some more rephrasing? Paul N.

Paul N., "I finally got up enough nerve to asker her to dance" is the best way to say it. "I finally MANAGED to get up enough nerve to ask her to dance " is okay too but a little wordy. Using the preposition "in" in this case is probably incorrect or at best, wordy. Well, enough microcritiquing. There you have it !

"You have to have done this" means the same thing as "You must have done this." You have to have doing this is not correct, because you never use have + doing.
