I have been speaking American for a number of years but I find it hard to understand in a conversation since they speak so fast. I might go to England in the hope of learning their version which I hope is slower. Would this be a good choice?

IMHO English people speak a bit faster than Americans do.I can see it by watching contemporary British and American movies. Often Americans speak like they barely closing their lips; and this way of pronouncing takes time. The British way is smoother and so faster. Again: it's only IMHO

Qwerty,
I don't doubt you however all I can say is that it sounds like you haven't heard Americans who talk with drawls yet. They live primarily in the South but still exist even as far north as West Virginia, southern Ohio and southern Indiana.
I remember seeing country singer David Allan Coe on television about 30 years ago talking to an Australian man in the audience after playing a song.
"When are you going to come tour our country," said the Australian, "You know, you're very popular there."
David Allan Coe replied very slowly "Well, ya see, aw wuz in the penitentiary for twenty years and aw maht have trouble gettin' a visa." ("Well, you see I was in the penitentiary for twenty years and I might have trouble getting a visa.")
To this, the Australian replied "Ah, we don't care. Come on down anyway and the only sharks are in the water."
