socks that end below the ankle

How do you call those socks which end just below the ankle. Here's an image to make clear what I mean: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0006PM21O.01-A293Q5VQLXBUWR._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Thank you for your help

If they're cut below the ankles, they're "low-cut" socks. If they're cut a little higher, covering the ankles, they're "quarter-cut" socks. The style you posted is a low-cut runner or running sock.

Some brands will market these as "ped" socks, but I think that's just to fool the consumer into thinking that they need one type of sock for running and another type for walking. I simply call them "bootie socks" or "booties" since they're reminiscent of the socks worn by toddlers and cheerleaders.

It's the only type of sock I wear, so I just call them 'socks'...

What about those end below the knee then??

Okay, if they end at or just below the knee, then they're "knee-high" socks or stockings. If they extend past the knee and up toward the thigh, then they're "thigh-high" socks/stockings. Socks that end midway between the ankle and the knee are called "mid-calf" socks. If they're ribbed above the ankle, they're called "crew" socks.

I anticipate that someone will now ask "what's the difference between socks and stockings?" Well, according to dictionary.com, a sock is "a short stocking reaching a point between the ankle and the knee."

I call the socks that end below the ankle 'trainer socks', above the ankle is 'ankle socks' and below the knee are 'knee-high socks'.
