***It's thanks to political correctness that a shopkeeper in England got into trouble a few weeks ago when some crazy member of the public called the police and accsued him of racism. His crime? Selling golliwogs in his toy shop***

And that particular shop was not in any inner city immigrant populated area either......it was in Bromyard, Herefordshire, England.....a small, picture postcard thatched cottage black and white timbered olde worlde pub and village green and duck speckled pond annual folk song and dance festival holding small town in the depths of the lush greenery of the English countryside....seemingly exempt from PC lunacy.....but apparently not. Some crank objected to seeing gollywogs on sale in a shop window so the stormtroopers moved in on the hapless shopkeeper.

Its like that episode of Extras, the one with Samuel L Jackson (top bloke)
She gets dead paranoid about her toy golly.

To be fair I get angered by PC, however, the gollywog incident wasn't in a toy shop, but a DIY shop with no other types of toys available. The gollywogs were positioned in the shop window along with DIY equipment for no apparent reason other than to spark trouble.

Wow, until you guys mentioned it, I had never heard of "golliwog" before. But I guess I'm not alone. According to one site, "The Golliwog (originally spelled Golliwogg) is the least known of the major anti-Black caricatures in the United States."

I guess it's somewhat akin to "Sambo" (now that one I've heard of.)

If you want to read some excellent (and at the same time amusing) commentary on politically corect language, try to locate a book "When will Jesus bring the porkchops" by George Carlin (also available in audio version, read by the author himself). While being extremely blunt and sometimes offensive (at least to some people - his humor doesn't phase me) he has some really interesting linguistic observations.
