Lock from Lost's accent?

Thought I should start a topic of my own, as I haven’t until now.

The character in Lost, called Lock has an interesting accent (I don't know whether this is the actor's accent, or one he is putting on)
To me he sounds Canadian, though at the same time I am aware there are accents in the north of the USA which are similar. Any one have any ideas?

He's from Michigan and went to school in Iowa. He's probably got a plain old North Central accent.

According to Wikipedia the actor who plays John Locke on the show, Terry O'Quinn, is from Newberry, Michigan, a little town in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Not surprisingly the English spoken in the Upper Midwest of the US shares quite a few features with the English spoken just across the border in Canada (features that aren't present here in California such as, say, Canadian Raising, which has actually been spreading further and further south from Canada) so that makes sense someone might guess he was Canadian.

Locke's a Yooper (from the U.P). That makes his accent different than the "normal" Michigan accent.
