English's loss of Latin

Guest   Wed May 31, 2006 7:38 pm GMT
<<Compare the English and Afrikaans:

ante meridiem (AM) - voor middag (VM) - 'before midday'
binoculars - verkyker (literally 'far-viewer')
et al. - en ander (e.a) - 'and others'
et cetera (etc.) - en so voorte (ens.)
i.e. - dit is (d.i.) - 'it is'
répondez s'il vous plaît (RSVP) - antwoord asseblief (A.Asb) - 'reply please' >>

does 'en so voorte' literally mean 'and so forth'? Because that term also exists in English.

Well, I decided to waste a couple of minutes, for 10-15 post the percentage of anti-romance language posts seems to be quite high. So here they are:

<<Yeah, but why would they (Romance languages posts) be the most frequent? It's not like the forum discriminates non romance speakers right?>>

<<but from what I can see these 'Latins' aren't specialists or buffs.>>

Excuse us you Mister Linguist.

<<I'm wondering as well why moderators, (I don't know who or how many there are) did not bann these people if (and I believe you) "they" completely ran over the place.>>

<<Hehehe, well I'm Dutch myself, and I too think German, or at least the standard form of it sounds very "gay".>>

At least I've never said such thing about any language.

<<if you think that there is even 1 Dutchman or woman that would bother to visit this forum to post derogative comments on a bunch of sociopaths believing they're the decendants of Roman soldiers >>

This is the most laughable thing you've ever said. I agree, you have a "wonderful" imagination.

<<Romance or Hellenic based words are just a bunch of cold letters>>

<<but I think it's rude to speak in French in a discussion like that.>>

<<In fact all 3 of these language have destroyed a great amount of earths linguistic variety. >>

<<This means you were talking out of your arse or you're very lazy.>>

Jav Jav Jav, what did you say about derogative comments ? there is no need of ugly and offensive words.

As to the Germanic languages what I meant is that I like them too and having time enough I'd like to learn one of them or at least to know how they work. Your "wonderful" imagination made you think that I've "embarked on a crusade against Germanic languages", that's again laughable.

"If you think that there is even one Dutchman or woman that would bother to visit this forum to post derogative comments on a bunch of sociopaths believing they're the descendants of Roman soldiers". Sorin thinks he's a descendant of Roman soldiers. He probably thinks that he's a descendant of Trajan.

Why is so important for everybody the Roman soldiers ?

Why do you think that if anybody wants to know or shows interest for knowing all about his own language is presumptuous.

Anyway those guys invaded or moved to lots of places for centuries. The same was done by the Greeks, Phoenicians, Muslims, Celts and a looong etc, somebody has to be a descendant of somebody so what's the deal ?

Icelanders are descendants of Vikings so if an Icelander wants to know about icelandic or feels proud of his language possibly he believes he is a Viking warrior with his axe included. Come on guys this is absurd.

I ask you! You're one of the people who believes this shit!

In my case my ancestors were from Spain, once in Spain their ancestors could have been Celt-Iberians, Muslims, Jewish or a mix of all that. Imposible to know but who cares.

Why is so important for you ?

Or are you one of those guys who believes that Romans were kidnapped by extraterrestrials and they never had descendants on earth ?

One subject that many people don't want to discuss is that many people in various parts of Europe are, in part, descended from Roman slaves.

Actually, it is the words borrowed from Romance languages which are usually considered to be the most formal.
Guest   Wed Jun 14, 2006 1:02 pm GMT
American culture is "borrowed". I mean the only true americans, that where acctualy born in America are (were)Indians. So I guess it shouldn't come as a shock that many words are borrowed.

I accept what you're saying, Guest, but the English language is not synonymous with the United States, as far as I'm concerned.

" think it's very rude to speak in a language other debaters do not comprehend when you are perfectly capable of speaking English. "

I understand just how you feel. Greg is the worst. He's fluent in English but he only speaks in French. He speaks to English people in French even when they can't speak French but he CAN speak English. So how the hell are we supposed to communicate?

Mais tu as fini par comprendre tout seul, comme un grand, mon pauvre Adam —> il va falloir que tu apprennes la langue de Molière !

Und vielleicht auch Deustch !

What is Deustch?
