Playing by myself

Can someone tell me if it is more correct to say when you are playing alone "I have been playing by myself" or "I have been playing with myself"?

Sorry, I had to laugh when I read your post, Pedro, but only because I have been there myself with my Spanish.

I have been playing with myself=I have been masturbating

"I have been playing by myself" is definately a better option.

ideally, you might even want to simply say "I was playing alone," although that sounds weird as well. Any reference to play and myself will inevitably cause most native speakers to think of the phrase "playing with myself," which as johnathan mark just said, means to masturbate in common english.

All depends on what exactly you were doing in private, Pedro!

At least "playing with myself" is action with someone for whom you really feel a deep affection. Isn't it amazing how the use of the wrong preposition can change the whole tone of a "polite" conversation.
