People vs. persons

Hiya! What's the difference between the words "people" and "persons"? I had always thought that the plural of "person" was "people", but I've seen the word "persons" written in some books. Is it "persons" used only in very formal contexts? Thanks in advance.

for example: "she's a very nice person". How would you express it in other way?

Yes, in in very formal contexts like the law. The two words have different meanings in such cases: roughly "persons" = "individuals" & "people" = "the masses".

The people of the world are all unique individuals.....each and every single one is a person in her/his own right.

You can also say 'The various PEOPLES of the world' when referring to different groups such as nations, ethnic groups etc
