Give examples of words that English is missing

The Swede   Sat Aug 06, 2005 2:38 pm GMT
For example Swedish have the word "blunda" it means shut one's eyes. You see one word in Swedish 3 in English.

What makes you think that words are missing? We can communicate in English perfectly well.
The Swede   Sat Aug 06, 2005 4:03 pm GMT
Well, I as a Swede can compare English with Swedish and I have found that Swedish has some words that don´t exist in English and vice versa. You can communicate well with your English, but not perfectly well.

Swede:
In Norwegian "blunde" means to sleep very lightly, to nap.

English certainly lacks a word for the day before yesterday. In Norwegian we say "iforgårs".

"English certainly lacks a word for the day before yesterday. In Norwegian we say "iforgårs". "

Its hard, but we survive without it
The Swede   Sat Aug 06, 2005 9:27 pm GMT
"förrgår" is missing, and also "övermorgon" the day after tomorrow.
Sander   Sat Aug 06, 2005 9:47 pm GMT
The day before yesterday:

'Eergisteren ' in Dutch

There is no word to differentiate between a male or female cousin.

True!

"We can communicate in English perfectly well" - that's what you think ! English is the most improbable/uncertain language...

The only Indo-European language without the second person plural !

...absolutly missing from English

How do you call a group of three women ?

"you guys"
"you three"
"you girls"
"you ladies"

there is no "second person plural"
american nic   Sun Aug 07, 2005 12:49 am GMT
Yeah there is - you. (Or y'all if you speak a Southern US dialect.)
Someone   Sun Aug 07, 2005 12:51 am GMT
Please don’t mention "You all" Sounds like a redneck…
Someone   Sun Aug 07, 2005 12:54 am GMT
you=2nd person, singular

2nd person plural is "under construction" or the rednecky y'all

No thanks !
american nic   Sun Aug 07, 2005 1:05 am GMT
You sound like an ignorant pig if you have a problem with the word 'y'all'.
Someone   Sun Aug 07, 2005 1:13 am GMT
Obviously you are american as your silly "nickname" shows.

Hey DUDE , for your narrow general culture. Nobody is using Y’all outside of the trashy WILD WEST US. Only yanks and rednecks like you…

You are an ignoramus !

“you guys"
"you three"
"you girls"
"you ladies"

Even if you’re saying “you ladies” or “You all” You are still using the singular form “you” and then adding the plural of LADY “ladies”. Either way the construction is :

“YOU-the 2nd person singular” + the plural of “lady, boy, girl, etc” or the “ALL”

Very undecided language…
