How the word Japan form?

In Japanese, Japan is pronouced as ni honn
so, do any of you know the formation of the very word?

I always thought it was "ni hon" with only one "n".

Perhaps D was thinking of how you type it into a computer. On Japanese computers you type "n" twice to get "ん". Normally you'd romanise it with only one & no space either "Nihon".

Of course, if followed by another consonant letter (except "y"), you only need type the "n" once.
