I am sure you could find something on the Web about studying English phonetically. It is very difficult, because there are many different pronunciations, and the spelling of words is not always related to their pronunciation.

I was watching a Gaelic program this evening about a famous Map maker. This was a historical program. He copied his map from someone else. In doing so, he consistently mispelt certain words.

Crawley for instance, was misspelt as Crabley. It seems like an odd mistake, but it was because the person he was copying from, wrote a 'W' that looked like a 'B'.

Wales was spelt as 'Wallis' which was interesting because I once knew someone with the surname 'Wallis'. He came from the North East of England.

I believe the word 'Wales' means 'Foreigner'.

Bye for now
