From an older past participle form of the Italian verb "dire" (to say).

The modern form is "detto."

Don't use ditto when speaking to adults, especially if you aren't well acquainted with them.

Yes, it's a very informal word. Usually used by children between 9-15. I wouldn't use it in the workplace unless you're trying to be funny.

I've never heard children say "ditto". When I was a child I heard an adult using this word and I didn't know what it meant.
