about TOEFL

First at all sorry that I’m using antimoon to discus about something that it is not one of the forums about I’m going to ask you.
I would like to know if it is required TOEFL score to apply for J visa. I’m planning to spend some time at one of the USA University as scientific researcher. And after that I will enroll the doctorates there, for which I need F visa and TOEFL score are mandatory.
But I do not know for this one J visa, could someone can help me on finding the answer.
