Where does the term "romance" languages comes from

Guest   Fri Jun 22, 2007 11:11 pm GMT
Is it because these languages are related to love or romanticism in some way?
Guest   Fri Jun 22, 2007 11:14 pm GMT
It is because the Romance languages are offshoots of Latin, the language of the ancient ROMANS. ROMANS=ROMANCE.

And the word "romance" where does came from? From romans too?

Romance languages are called that way as they all ultimately derive primarily from Latin, the language spoken throughout much of the Roman Empire. More specifically, Romance languages derive from Vulgar Latin, which were the Latin varieties spoken by people who lived in old Roman areas several centuries after the fall of Rome. Vulgar Latin was significantly different from the varieties of original Latin that were spoken in the time of the Roman Empire.

The word romance is due to the fact that certain works with "romantic themes" were written using the "vernacular" Romance languages, as opposed to Latin, which is what serious and scholarly works were written in. Romances began as tales of heroic deeds, though. Only later did they become concerned with matters such as "courtly love." You can read about the history of the romance here.

It's because Spanish, a Romance language, makes the speaker want to have hot butt-sex with every male they come across. I would advise all to stay away from this sinful language of homosexuality.

Then, with so many homosexuals as there are in US, Spanish will have a bright future there.
Guest   Sat Jun 23, 2007 1:28 am GMT
Only because these homosexuals immigrate from Mexico!
Adolf   Sat Jun 23, 2007 1:31 am GMT
Hispanics have the highest fertility rate, and English native speakers the lowest because they are prone to homosexuality. I don't think this is bad anyway.

You're from Spain, a country that has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. Maybe it's just that country with all of the homosexuals?
Adolf   Sat Jun 23, 2007 2:23 am GMT
Spain has a higher fertility rate than US white population
