Which would you commonly use and why?

the day on which we met was...
the day when we met was...
the day we met was...
the place at which we met was...
the place where we met was...
the place we met was...

I'd use any of them, depending on what was going on.

What do you mean?

"The day we met was" covers the first two. 'When' or 'on which' are superfluous in most cases. Though its more natural to say "We met on...."

Same with "the place we met was", though I've often heard "the place where we met was". More common is "We met at...."

Exceptions would be: "The place where we met has always been special to us".
