So... What's the difference between linguistics and philology?

Philology is more concerned with the study of written texts, while linguistics is generally focussed on speech. There is of course a lot of overlap between the two. Early studies of Proto-Indo-European were done by philologists, though nowadays it's conducted using linguistics. I've never heard of any philology being done recently though; I think it's pretty much done.
