what does this sentence mean?

I asked one of my friends this question who was living in the USA.

How do you find USA as a country?

He replied: In USA, everything is money and money is everything.

What was he trying to say with the above mentioned sentence? I didn't get it.

Thanks.

If he is not a native born American, he probably meant that the only reason to live in America is for the money that's easier to get there than anywhere else in the world, and since money is everything, that's a good enough reason.

Yup. He is not a native born American. Your explanation makes sense.

I'm not so sure... It sounds like he is trying to criticize us...

When one says "money is everything" in the USA it seems to imply that all Americans think about it money, but I like Guest's explanation better... It's just not the first thing that came to my mind.

"Money makes the world go round", in this case, USA.

Like people care a big deal about money, and money can buy anything.
