Can one ever get rid of one's accent?

Beneficii, those links deal with peer pressure, rather than bullying.

That approach might be beneficial for a child, but as the text says, would not work for an adult. The essay is not without merit, however; many of the ideas would work just fine.

As an aside, I did find one or two factual errors in the text.

Jasper,

"That approach might be beneficial for a child, but as the text says, would not work for an adult."

Where does the text say that? I think you may have misread it. The text says that childrens' peers are nastier than adults' peers. It doesn't say that if an adult's peers are nastier it may not work. It does say an adult is better at avoiding hazing, but what if the adult doesn't avoid hazing? I think the text still leaves open that possibility.

Also, in that alljapaneseallthetime.com link, Khatzumoto, who is currently in his 20s, had that experience with that one peer he mentioned just a couple years ago. If I recall correctly, he started learning Japanese at age 21.

Thanks for all the valuable help. I'm gradually trying to talk more, its just embarassing when you say something and someone says "WHAT?!" ten times before he fnally gets what I was trying to say. I guess Iam overdramatising it but its not as easy for some people. I live in Manchester if thats of any use to anyone.

Michael, see here http://www.antimoon.com/forum/t9165.htm for a similar problem to yours, especially the statement, that it's really hard to understand chinese people when speaking English.
