I chuckled when the train I was on (from Oxford to Paddington, London) drew into Slough train station. There was a small party of Germans behind me in the carriage and when they saw the station sign I heard something that sounded like "Sluff" in the middle of their German-speak. You can't blame them, with that horrible and confusing "ough" formation that has so many pronunciation variations.

The place name Slough (just to the west of London) rhymes with "now" or "bough" (as on a tree). It's the place that the poet John Betjeman disliked so much and he wrote a poem during the early days of WW2 urging German bombs to come and fall on Slough. "Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough...it isn't fit for humans now!"

As it happened, a short while later, not so friendly German bombs actually did fall on Slough with many fatal casualties, but I can't find any record of Betjeman expressing regret at tempting Fate.

"The Office"...the TV program with that clown David Brent (Ricky Gervais) ....that particular office was in Slough!

There are many people who SAY that learning English is difficult.

Don't worry (be sure to add in the apostrophe when you write this.)...

I would use "because" instead of "cause" and I wouldn't write "O.k!" like that.

Somehow this message from lucifer is very disturbing. If Satan can't pronounce a word, how the devil can anyone?

This is funny... English can be confusing when trying to pronounce some written words that one isn't familiar with. There was a funny explanation I heard about the English language when I lived in Western North Carolina (BTW, they have a peculiar regional accent that resembles Scottish brogue). I had said that the past tense of "throw" was "threw", my friend, half joking used the following sentence to "correct" me:
"I took a rock and throwed it through the window"
(ah tuk a rok an thowed it thru the winder)
LOL
