Why are Brazilians/Latin Americans more hostile to their mother country than the English colonies (Australia, SA, NZ) towards England?
Guest   Sat Mar 01, 2008 2:34 am GMT
I don' see that hostility.

<< Brazilian soap operas glorifying Italian immigration (like Terra Nostra or Terra Speranza) introduced the expression ''È vero'' which became popular and it's now universally used in Brazil. (É vero.) >>

You're right! The real Portuguese equivalent of ''È vero'' is "'È verdade'' ''È vero'' which means "It's true in English.

<< Amazing! The lengths French fanatics will go to! It is the most common of common knowledge Pinochet and Bachelet have French roots. >>

That's why Pinochet ruled to wipe out the hispanic dung beetle like you.

Just wait and you'll wake up that one day will become a Francophone country and a full member of La Francophonie turning it's back on Spanish language and culture and detach from La Hispanidad.

Madame Bachelet va travailler sur ceci!

To my mind it were the African slaves that had the most influence on bringing about a change in the way Portuguese is spoken in Brazil.
The children of the first Portuguese settlers were looked after and often even breastfed by African maids who spoke a corrupted Portuguese.
The same can be said for the way Dutch changed into Afrikaans.

Listen. Italian and Portuguese do have much vocabulary in common e.g. porta (door), festa (party), casa (house), forte (strong), ponte (bridge), porto (port), isso (this), fosse (was/were), grande (big/large), etc, etc.

In terms of vocabulary, Portuguese and Italian are as close as Spanish and italian for example. Only French shares more vocabulary and grammar with Italian aprrox. 89% - Spanish and Portuguese share 89% of their vocabulary and grammar. Spanish and Portuguese continue to be the closest major romance languages even if their accents are different. But educated speakers of these two languages understand each other very well, and perfectly in writing. That said, after Spanish, Italian is the next closest to Portuguese, and then French. It's as simple as that.

And for those of you who insist on putting European Portuguese down, get this. A new accord for the Portuguese orthography was reached between most of the Portuguese speaking nations, and it will be legally implemented real soon, but will obviously take some years to be fully implemented. This means that although there are several Portuguese 'accents', there will only be 1 official writing standard for every Portuguese speaking country, including Brazil. So the Portuguese language is not in any danger at all. In fact, it is growing in popularity evry day all over the world. The Chinese government recognizes the global importance of Portuguese, and they trade heavily with all Portuguese speaking nations. And thanks to the Mercosur trade agreement, many of the Spanish speaking countries now have Portuguese as the second language taught in their schools.

"Why are Brazilians/Latin Americans more hostile to their mother country than the English colonies (Australia, SA, NZ) towards England?"

>Because we are independent countries and whatever happens in the Iberia Peninsula is not of our interest.

And Australia, SA and NZ are not independent countries? Your answer makes absolutely ZERO sense.

My guess is that some Brazilians just don't like themselves so they blame Portugal. How stupid. Portugal and the Portuguese are doing just fine wherever they are in the world. Brazilians should focus on bettering themselves first before laying blame elsewhere.

Secondly, let me remind you that most Brazilians do not feel that way about Portugal. Generally it is the ones who are not doing well in life that complain, but it is only displaced anger. After all, it was Portugal that formed the root and foundation of Brazil, and gave Brazil their beloved language (even if the Brazilian accent is uniquely 'Brazilian'). If they hate all things Portuguese, then they surely must hate themselves.

Well said guest! I am Brasileiro and I have nothing against the Portuguese at all. What they gave us is largely responsible for who we are. Sure, as colonizers they made some mistakes, but which European colonizers didn't? I would argue that the Portuguese were more tolerant than some of the others e.g., Spanish and English. At least our country won it's independance more or less peacefully, while much blood was spilled in the Spanish colonies before they got their independance. And the English salvery regime was always brutal. In the United States for example, slavery lasted a lot longer, than in Brazil or Spanish America. At least the Portuguese colonizers acknowledged the children they had from negro or native Indian mothers as equals. Most of all, the Portuguese gave us our beautiful, soulful language, which today is the 6th most widely spoken language in the world.

Brazil has been independent for almost 200 years!! So we can't blame the Portuguese for what we have or haven't done with our country since then. Portugal is our brother country, always will be. And all the Portuguese speaking countries are united by our common language PORTUGUESE, regardless of different accents. Countries that speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, French etc., all speak with different accents - no big deal.

Hispanics of indigenous lineage are the most hostile. They did get pretty annihilated.

They should be grateful that the were taught a sophisticated language.

The Aztecs were as sophisticated as any Europeans.
