They have a nice car or they have nice cars? Which is right?

How many cars do "they" have? A couple with one shared car has a nice car (the first one) and if they have two or more then it's the second one.
Either way, depending on how many cars they have. Multiple people can jointly own one thing, or one person can own several, if that is the "agreement" you are worried about.
