Please correct me if I'm wrong about the following situation.

I am a fan of Brazillian footballer, Ronaldinho. And I also a fan of Manchester United (MU). Last year, MU planned to buy this player, but failed, because he finally moved to Barcelona. I will say this to a friend of mine:

1. If I were Sir Alex, I would tried hard to buy Ronaldinho.
or
2. If I had been Sir Alex, I would have tried hard to buy Ronaldinho.

Thank you.

''1. If I were Sir Alex, I would tried hard to buy Ronaldinho.'' You can't ever say ''would tried''. you can't use a past tense right after ''would''. You could say ''If I were Sir Alex, I would try hard to buy Ronaldinho.''

''I am a fan of Brazillian footballer, Ronaldinho.'' I think that should be ''''I am a fan of Brazillian football''.

The question is: which one is correct?
dian   Thursday, March 25, 2004, 04:38 GMT
Yes, I should have written: "would try" not "would tried".

About the two sentences, which one is correct?
dian   Thursday, March 25, 2004, 04:40 GMT
Because I am not a fan of Brazillian football in general, but I am a fan of Ronaldinho, he is Brazillian footballer.

Thanks for your response.

They're both correct but they have very slightly different meanings.

1. starts off in the present tense: "if I were Sir Alex right now, at this moment", then shifts to past tense and speaks about an action you would have performed.

2. is speaking in the past tense: "if I had been Sir Alex at some point in the past", and then continues to speak about an action you would have performed.
