Table and label

You know when you lot keep doing this - Apple=[@p.l] - for example, I have no idea what it means. I understand it is the pronunciation but where did you find pronouciation like this and how on earth do you recognise it enough to day it. To me, it just looks like a bunch of random symbols that can't be pronounced.
