Which one is correct or better?

I'm afraid there was no available room on July 25.

Both are correct. The second specifically indicates rooms like living quarters.

I'm afraid there was no available room on July 25. ~ there was no vacant space; it could have been used for housing large equipment, and not necessarily people.

I'm afraid there were no available rooms on July 25. ~ specifically no vacant dwellings to live in, if you're talking about a hotel or similar.

Mick is correct....as per usual ;-)
(What did I say about Oz Superheroes in another thread?)

One was singular, the other plural so the phrase takes the appropriate verb form.
