I wish I was there is correct. If someone wants to argue that, then that's their problem.

Well, it's not anyone's "problem."

Technically "were" is corect in a conditional sentence. "Was" is often used colloquially. If in doubt, use "were."

I think that both of these two forms are coorect, but "If I were" in my opinion is more common.

I think that everyone so far has ignored another valid
use of 'if I was' -- in a conditional that is known to be true.

For example, Bill Clinton could say
"If I was the president in 1998 then I was the one in charge".

This would be grammatically correct, even for those who insist on subjunctives in counterfactual conditional statements, because Clinton's statement isn't counterfactual.
