nod

Is there a word to say "no" as nod to say "yes"?
George   Monday, April 18, 2005, 06:36 GMT
What?

Nodding is an action made by moving one's head up and down. It's not a synonym for the word "yes."

mjd - that's in European cultures. Indians tend to shake their heads in a diagonal fashion for an affirmative answer. I think for a negative answer its the same as a European yes

Oh! I think I know what you're asking, rich7

a head-nod means 'yes', 'affirmative'
a head-shake means 'no', 'negative'

My apologies, I think I read the question wrong.

The term is to "shake one's head" no. You'll sometimes hear: "he/she shook his/her head," meaning from left to right. This is a sign that means "no."

So you can not say "no" just using a word for the head's movement side to side.

Well, George, at least here, in passing someone else, a head-nod towards them while momentarily making eye contact with them also can be just a general greeting as well, as an indication of general respect and like, rather than meaning "yes" per se.

ok thanks, pay no atention to the above since I was slowly writing before you posts.

Sorry, George, I hadn't refreshed.
