J.R.R. Tolkien's English

It's obvious that Tolkien was an expert in languages. Anyway, his English pronunciation was really difficult to understand, at least for me - I heard an interview with him once.
Do English people understand him well?
How many foreign languages did Tolkien speak?

I listened to a video clip from this site and didn't have any problems understanding him:

Yeah, I could understand him, although he does mumble a lot when he talks. I think that is the problem more than his accent.

I didn't have any trouble understanding him, but I agree that he mumbles a lot. In the first interview clip, "unfortunately, also" sounded like "unfortntslso.
