Shifter's Position

Here's something about automobile ...
I've heard people said "shifter in middle"; is that correct?
And what about shifter besides the steeringwheel?

In the US, we'd probably call it the gearshift instead of the shifer.

In my part of the US a manual transmissions "shifter" would be called the stick as in a "stick shift" (as opposed to an automatic Trans). A “stick shift” next to the steering wheel is said to be “on the column” (steering column). I may be showing my age here but at one time most manual transmissions were either “four on the floor” (four speed, stick on the floor) or “three speed on the column”.
